Steve Scruton joins MacGillivray Law_.

Steve Scruton joined MacGillivray Law in 2022, after spending fourteen years working in personal injury and insurance from the opposite side. After graduating from the University of New Brunswick Faculty of Law in 2007, Steve returned to his home province of Newfoundland and Labrador to practice law. He began his career at a large regional law firm before going on to accept a position opening and running an in-house legal office for one of the largest insurance companies in Canada.

Over those years, Steve honed his skills as a litigator and negotiator, and carries those with him to MacGillivray Law. His work for the defence side has also given him a competitive advantage that few others have – not only does he have a deep understanding of how insurance companies look at claims, but he has existing relationships that let him approach things in a more direct and practical way. As he said when asked about dealing with people on the insurance side: ‘I have instant credibility with them because I have been in their shoes. That lets me cut through the noise and get to the heart of the matter.’

In some ways, Steve’s move to MacGillivray Law mirrored another one of the firm’s partners, Chad Horton. Steve and Chad met at law school and had early careers that mirrored each other in many ways. When Chad made the switch to MacGillivray Law in late 2020, Steve took note. When the opportunity to join MacGillivray Law presented itself, Steve jumped at the chance to join a firm which he had long admired for its proactive and innovative approach to their work. He was encouraged to find out that in joining MacGillivray Law, he wasn’t just joining Chad, but a whole team of like-minded people, all working together for their clients.

And for Steve, it’s the clients who matter. As someone who deeply cares about people, he knows that at the end of the day all anybody wants is to feel like they’ve been heard and that they’ve been treated fairly. He knows the legal process can be stressful for people and finds real meaning in using his expertise to help his clients navigate that process and take away some of that stress, all while getting them the compensation they deserve.
