Chad has practiced insurance and personal injury law for 15 years and brings a unique perspective to the team at MacGillivray Law.

As a former insurance defense litigator at a large private practice defense firm in Nova Scotia, Chad practiced with and received formal mentorship from four generations of some of the very best defense lawyers in the province (several of whom have gone on to sit as Justices on the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal).

Throughout that time, Chad represented more than 20 major insurance companies, with a focus on providing coverage analysis and defending claims in the areas of automobile and personal injury, occupiers’ liability, property insurance and professional liability, with appearances before the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia, as well as a variety of specialized tribunals.

In 2013, Chad was invited to serve as counsel to Canada’s largest property and casualty insurer. He defended hundreds of personal injury claims and specialized in claims involving chronic pain, complex regional pain syndrome, orthopedic polytrauma, psychiatric injuries (including somatic symptom disorder), and traumatic brain injuries. As Senior Counsel, Chad was involved in successful advocacy before the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia, the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal, the Supreme Court of Canada and the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador.

In late 2020, Chad was invited to join the team at MacGillivray Law as a Partner. The firm’s passion for the work, commitment to its clients, and willingness to advocate for fair results resonated with him.

“Excellence has always been important to me. I always had tremendous respect for Jamie MacGillivray [Founding Partner] and I know from experience that the exceptional team at MacGillivray Law is committed to being the best at what they do. They care about their work, they care about their clients, and they persevere. I wanted to be a part of that.”

Now Chad uses the skills, experience, and institutional knowledge earned throughout his previous career as Defense Counsel to help injured people receive fair treatment from insurance companies and their lawyers.

In addition to practicing law, Chad is a long-time strength and conditioning enthusiast and former Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner (Titan’s MMA), with a “strong body, strong mind” philosophy. In addition to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, he believes that consistently training to make himself “comfortable with being uncomfortable” helps him discipline his mind to more effectively deal with the adversarial nature of litigation.
