Nova Scotia Power Data Breach – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is MacGillivray Law doing in response to the Nova Scotia Power data breach?

We are actively gathering information and reviewing facts related to the data breach reported by Nova Scotia Power. Our goal is to understand what happened, what information may have been affected, and whether legal options may be available to individuals impacted.

Is there a lawsuit underway?

No. At this stage, we are conducting an investigation only. No lawsuit has been filed, and no findings have been made regarding responsibility or liability.

Are you preparing a complaint to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner?

Yes. As part of our investigation, we are preparing materials for submission to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. This helps ensure the incident receives independent scrutiny.

Does submitting my information to you mean that I am hiring your firm?

No. Providing your information does not create a lawyer–client relationship and does not obligate you to participate in any future legal action.

Why are you reviewing this incident?

Following a major data breach, people naturally have questions about:

  • What information was affected
  • Whether adequate safeguards were in place
  • Potential risk of misuse
  • Possible remedies under Canadian privacy law

Our role is to collect facts, identify legal issues, and determine whether a claim may be warranted. We are not assuming or asserting wrongdoing by Nova Scotia Power.

How will you use the information I provide?

  1. Your information will be added to our internal investigation list;
  2. We may contact you if clarification is needed;
  3. You will be notified of key developments;
  4. You are not retained as a client unless a formal retainer is signed.

Is this a class action?

Not at this time. We are currently assessing whether a class action may be appropriate, but no certification has been sought.

Will I be compensated?

There is no guarantee of compensation or that legal action will proceed. Outcomes depend on the findings of our investigation, applicable legal standards, and regulatory reviews.

Are you claiming Nova Scotia Power did something wrong here?

No. Our investigation is neutral and focused on understanding what occurred. We are not alleging negligence or liability at this time.

Does accepting Nova Scotia Power’s credit monitoring affect my rights?

No. Accepting credit monitoring does not affect your rights, and it is generally a positive step toward protecting your information.

Does filling out the form make me part of a lawsuit?

No. Submitting the form is solely for investigative purposes and does not mean you are part of any legal action.

Disclaimer
