In the spring of 2023, MacGillivray Injury Law began working with Mi’kmaq artist Alan Syliboy to redefine how we market our services. We have a long history with the artist and you will see many of his paintings in our offices. We have also sponsored public installations of his work including Tuft’s Cove Survivor on the Halifax Waterfront. You may have seen a beautiful whale in Alan Syliboy’s distinctive style on a MacGillivray Law billboard in your own community.
Alan Syliboy’s work is influenced by the indigenous Mi’kmaq rock drawing and quill weaving traditions. Alan’s work is in acrylic and mixed media, creating vibrantly coloured images exploring the themes of family, searching, spirituality, struggle, and strength. The use of layering symbols and mark making creates depth and texture in Alan’s work.
On the surface, it may be challenging to understand the connection between a personal injury law firm and Alan’s paintings of whales, eels, and other familiar scenes of Atlantic Canada. Upon closer examination, though, our work at MacGillivray Injury Law is deeply connected to the art we share with Alan.
We are Atlantic Canada
Alan Syliboy’s work is influenced by his life and the landscape of Atlantic Canada. At MacGillivray Injury Law, we surround ourselves with Alan’s images because it is what we know and it is who we are. We believe that Atlantic Canadians who are suffering an injury may feel more comfortable and better understood by a lawyer who calls their province home and has made a career of practicing law in their province.
We work as a team
The latest adventure for Alan’s beloved character, Little Thunder and his friend, Wolverine, featured on our new billboards, is an exhibition of teamwork and supporting each other on a shared goal. For the team at MacGillivray Injury Law, we understand that working as a team is the clearest path towards successful outcomes for our clients. We understand that we can do more and do better work together.
In Alan’s story Wolverine and Little Thunder: An Eel Fishing Story, his two characters work together to catch a giant eel. This story is about friendship, the importance of traditional knowledge, and how working together can help us achieve lofty goals. At MacGillivray Injury Law, these virtues guide our work.
We are in your community
MacGillivray Injury Law works in your community with people like you. We recently supported Northumberland Regional High School’s newly opened disc golf course. Disc golfers may notice our sign on the course, which features more of Syliboy’s artwork.
We are active in our communities across Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island. We are proud to be an Atlantic Canadian law firm with staff that live in the communities we serve.
We do things differently
Our billboards and internet advertisements don’t look like the ads of every other law firm. At MacGillivray Injury Law, we pride ourselves on doing things differently and forging our own path. This allows us to break the mould, implement cutting-edge technology and innovative processes, and boldly take on challenging cases. By embracing being different, we are able to get better settlements for our clients.
The art that Alan Syliboy creates is aspirational for the MacGillivray Injury Law Team and embodies the values that we seek to espouse in our work. MacGillivray Injury Law is proud to work with Alan Syliboy and other Indigenous artists as we strive to provide personal injury legal services to all Atlantic Canadians.
