Solicitor by day, salsa by night – Lathia Stubbs helps clients through difficult situations.

“I love law because it allows me to connect with people."

Lathia Stubbs joined MacGillivray Law in 2018, after she was called to the bar in Canada.

Her extensive academic career spans back to when she entered law school at the University of West Indies campus in Nassau, Bahamas, where she is from.

“It was a childhood dream of mine to practice law,” she explains. “I realized early on that I enjoyed writing, reasoning, problem solving, and working with people, that’s what drew me to law school.”

It wasn’t always smooth sailing, however. Lathia, while completing her Associate Degree in Law and Criminal Justice, realized that criminal law was not her desired area of practice. Once she entered law school she discovered the different areas of law that were open to her for exploring.

After she was called to the bar in The Bahamas, Lathia moved to Canada to attend the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University for her Master’s degree in law. Following this degree, she went on to obtain her legal accreditation through the National Committee on Accreditation, Federation of Law Societies of Canada.

“My interest was initially in corporate law, but as an international lawyer there were challenges in obtaining an articling position as most firms had already hired their articling clerks when I was ready to start. When I started articling at MacGillivray Injury and Insurance Law, I realized that I actually enjoy litigation, which previously was not a huge interest of mine. It gives me the opportunity to connect with people on a greater level.”

While she was only supposed to stay for the one year of schooling, she has now made Nova Scotia her home.

“I fell in love with the city and decided that I wanted to stay here,” she says.

Since then, she has engrained herself in the community while simultaneously seeking out her passions that she took with her from her home, including sign language and salsa dancing.

Lathia’s compassion and care for her clients shines through every interaction she has with her clients.

“I love law because it allows me to connect with people. Here at MacGillivray Law, once I started meeting with clients and learning about their needs and helping them with their difficult situations, my desire to help people just continued to grow.”
